What does “maximum compatibility” do?

It makes sure the result uses H.264 video and AAC audio in MP4 and MOV, or VP9 and Opus in WebM. Those combinations play on phones, TVs, browsers and every editor. If the source already uses them, nothing is re-encoded and the conversion is instant.

Is converting lossless?

When only the container changes, yes: the video and audio data is copied byte for byte. If a codec has to change, for example HEVC to H.264 for an old TV, the video is re-encoded at a bitrate matched to the original.

Can I convert to AVI, WMV or FLV?

Not yet. Those legacy formats have no browser encoder. Convert to MP4 instead; it is accepted by everything that once needed AVI.

Why does the same file behave differently in another browser?

Each browser ships its own set of hardware codecs. Chrome and Edge decode and encode the widest range, including HEVC on most systems. Safari and Firefox cover the common cases. If a conversion fails, trying Chrome usually solves it.

Does converting to MP4 make the file smaller?

Not by itself. A container change keeps the same data. To shrink the file, use the compress tool, which lets you set a size target.
