Why are GIFs so much larger than videos?
GIF is a 30-year-old format that stores every frame as a full image with at most 256 colours and no real video compression. A five-second clip that is 200 KB as MP4 can easily be several megabytes as GIF. Keep clips short, use 480 px or less, and 10 to 15 frames per second.
What settings give the best result?
For chat and documentation, 480 px wide at 15 fps and under eight seconds is the sweet spot. Use 20 fps or more only for fast motion. Lower the width first if the file is too large.
Can the GIF have a transparent background?
No. Video frames have no transparency, so the GIF is always opaque.
Should I use a GIF or a short MP4?
If the destination plays video, MP4 or WebM gives far better quality at a fraction of the size. GIF is the right choice where only images are allowed, such as README files, some chat apps and email.
Is there a length limit?
The tool caps a single GIF at 900 frames, which is one minute at 15 fps. Longer than that makes files nobody wants to load.
